Hi, I'm Kate Hill. February 15th, 2023 was the fateful day for me. I was skiing on a day like any other when I crashed on the slope and shattered my tibial plateau - the top of my shin bone under the knee - into ten pieces.
I didn't know that at the time. I just knew I was in pain and I couldn't stand up. The ski rescue team took me down the mountain and then to the local hospital where they x-rayed my leg and told me I'd need surgery.
It took three surgeons three hours to piece my leg back together. I'd REALLY broken it. No small and easily healed leg fracture for me. I had five screws and a metal rod inserted into my tibia.
Five days later, I was back at home, sleepless and in pain, weak and utterly shocked at what had happened to me. I'd never broken a bone before, let alone been dependent on crutches and other people to help me with my daily life.
People told me I'd be depressed.
That this would be the worst experience of my life.
They told me I'd be crying every day and reliving what happened over and over.
But I decided this didn't have to be my reality. It was bad enough being confined to bed with a broken leg, let alone being depressed and miserable as well!
So I researched and learned everything I could about how to speed up my recovery, how to cope with the confinement and isolation, and how to heal my broken leg as fast as possible.
And it worked. Four months later, I hiked 8 kilometres - without my crutches.
I'm here to teach you everything I know. So that you can get back on your feet as soon as possible, too.
